Helping A Child Helps The Whole Family

When workers from the Philippines’ new Family Circus church and feeding program visited the hospital nearly 20 years ago, their intention was to help a sick boy whose unwed mother couldn’t afford the medicine he needed. They were surprised when Girlie (not her real name) showed up at their fledgling church with 50 children—and some of their parents—from the slum where she lived.

“You helped my sick little son,” she told them. “It is my privilege to bring you the children.”

The next week, Girlie’s “flock” had doubled, and she became known as “the Pied Piper of the Philippines.”
