Drought Relief Aid for Herder Families

Sensitive Country

A closed communist Asian country has suffered recurring spring droughts over the past few years. Spring is a critical time for herder families and their livestock. Food supplies have dwindled after a long winter, and their animals are giving birth. Recurring drought is devastating for these herders who live on the margins, and it seems that the spring grasses are coming later every year. Spring dust storms have made it even more difficult for these families. The cold winters require the herders to find ways to heat their gers, or yurts. The Warm Ger project is providing coal and supplies to these herder families who cannot afford coal. They are burning animal dung to stay warm. A group of local pastors and churches have come together with a plan to provide relief and show Christ’s compassion in a practical way. ALO partners with them to supply some of the funds, and they distribute hay bales, oats, coal, and other needed supplies to as many as 60 families.

Mission:

Target for 2024: $20,080

Breakdown: 60 families × $168 worth of feed and supplies = $10,080; Warm Ger Project serving 60 families, coal and heating supplies = $10,000

Additional Details: Last year, ALO was able to help 20 families. When the church workers were delivering the supplies to one family, they encountered a baby with a severe burn that had become infected. The pastors helped the family take the baby to the hospital. After some time of treatment in the intensive care unit, the child’s life was saved. As a result, the family—and seven others—have become part of the local church and are discovering abundant life.

“Let them praise the Lord for his great love and for the wonderful things he has done for them. For he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.”
